A Friend of the Family, Inc., is an educational consulting company founded to provide alternative schools, counseling, and special programs for students and their families. Our mission is to provide resources that will enable students to overcome their challenges and to assist them in achieving academic, social, and personal success.
Dr. Kim L. Allen and William L. Allen established A Friend of the Family, Inc. (AFOF) in 1999. The philosophy of AFOF is that an alternative education demands an environment that will enable youth to maximize their potential - academically, socially, emotionally, and personally. "By instilling a feeling of self worth, pride, accountability, and Esprit de Corps in each of our students, we seek to promote their emotional wellness and personal success."
Kim L. Allen, Ed.D., Administrator
Having more than two decades of experience in education and social work at all levels, from Head Start to higher education, Dr. Allen is currently responsible for the overall operation of multiple alternative education programs in New Castle County. Dr. Allen has partnered with several agencies in New Castle County to provide programs such as TOOLS (Teaching Others Optimum Learning Strategies) and First Chance, an evening reporting center designed to provide youth an alternative to detention.
Dr. Allen served on the Delaware Department of Education Positive Behavior Support Committee, which established and reviewed the impact and design of personal support plans for school-age children. She is the recipient of the Dr. Al O. Plant Lifetime Achievement Award and The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc., Rho Chapter Community Service Award.
Dr. Allen holds Masters' Degree in social work and education, a doctorate in education, and is certified in the state of Delaware for Principal Secondary School and Supervisor Special Services.

Mr. Allen is the liaison with local business professionals willing to participate in the school-to-work mentoring component of the AFOF curriculum. Mr. Allen's extensive experience with area businesses affords him the opportunity to solicit experienced individuals who will provide students with mentorship, hands-on-training and experience with basic life skills, such as money management and professional conduct. Mr. Allen has an MBA in Marketing and Finance.

Dr. Allen and Mr. Allen are members, board directors, and participating supporters of a number of agencies in the tri state area. Their philanthropic philosophy was featured in a March 7 edition of Business Week entitled "When Givers Get Together. The article encompasses their passion to provide equality in education for all students and the impact working with youth has on the future. Their continuous involvement in the community and business world provides opportunities and experiences that make it possible to extend to their students "an educational process that stretches beyond the walls of the classroom".
